First, please read this: Agile Modeling Pictures.

Agile modeling needs lots of "whiteboard" space -- but that does not imply one needs official whiteboards. There are several alternatives:

  • whiteboard sheets
  • whiteboard paint
  • whiteboard wallpaper
  • bathroom shower waterproofing sheets (big, cheap, work as whiteboards)
  •  ???

The type of marker pen combined with the type of sheet is important. Note the hints below on complementary pens.

Comments below on a few options...

Rediform or National Brand or Avery Write-On Cling Sheets

Easily available in: North America

Plus:

  • erases well
  • plain white

Minus:

  • separate sheets mean that one must tape them all to the wall
  • they have a "good" and "bad" side in terms of erasibility... very subtle to find/remember
  • difficult to separate them neatly along their perforations
  • less durable and erasable than 3M solution

Complementary Marker Pens:

  • Expo

Other:

  • if writing is "baked on" after 1+ days, will erase with warm water, soap, and "elbow grease"

LegaMaster Magic Chart, Leitz Easy Flip, Magic Flip Chart, etc (many variants sold in europe)

Easily available in: Europe

Plus:

  • easy to set up wall -- long rolls

Minus:

  • less erasable than National Brand solution
  • some (not all brands) have cross-hatching, though in practice this has not bothered me or the teams i work with
  • less durable and erasable than 3M solution

Complementary Marker Pens:

  •  ??

Other:

  • if writing is "baked on" after 1+ days, will erase with warm water, soap, and "elbow grease"

3M Whiteboard Sheets

Plus:

  • erases well
  • easy to put many together on a wall; they self-stick
  • durable and erasable

Minus:

  • at least as of 2009 they have a black frame line around them, which means that when you append them to others, you have many ugly and inconvenient black lines on all sides of all squares

Complementary Marker Pens:

  •  ???

Other:

  • i haven't tried these, and don't know how long the self-stick lasts
